Rum is a distilled spirit made from sugarcane byproducts. Distilled rum is believed to have originated somewhere in Central or South America in the 17th century, but fermented sugarcane beverages can be traced back to centuries before this in Asia. Rum comes in different types or grades; notable examples include: dark rum, gold rum, light rum, overproof rum, premium rum, flavoured rum and spiced rum.
While dark and gold rum is commonly consumed neat or on the rocks, all types of rum have been used as cocktail mixers, especially in “tropical” cocktails. Popular rum-based cocktails include Mai-Tai, Piña Colada and Mojito.
Due to the various types, the alcohol content in rum ranges widely from 40% to 80% alcohol by volume.
